SCOTS SECOND HALF SPURT PROPELS GORDON PAST REGIS

WENHAM, Mass. - Gordon College defeated the Regis College field hockey team, 5-1, on Tuesday night in non-league action in Wenham, Mass. The Fighting Scots snapped a six-game losing streak to improve to 2-8 overall on the year, while the Pride remain winless on the season at 0-7.

Gordon wasted little time taking control of the game as Melanie Landis (Quakertown, Pa.) finished a feed from Karli Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.) just seven minutes into the game to establish the early 1-0 lead. Despite outshooting their guests 24-2 in the half, however, Landis' tally proved to be the only one of the opening stanza, leaving the Pride within one at the midway point.

That all changed in favor of the Scots in the second half, as Gordon went on a scoring tear behind goals from Mindy Fowler (Winslow, Maine), Balmer, Landis, and Carissa Fraser (Seaford, N.Y.) in a 20 minute span to widen the gap to 5-0 with just under 12 minutes to play.

The Pride finally broke their silence when Devan Wirtanen (Westminster, Mass.) broke loose and buried an unassisted tally in the 68th minute to get her team on the board, but that was as close as Regis would get as the Scots' defense tightened down the stretch to secure the four-goal win.

Balmer finished the night with three assists to go with her single tally, while keepers Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) and Abigail Lutz (Winslow Maine) combined for six saves in the win.

Regis keepers Morgan Mitchell (Ashburnham, Mass.) and Raegan Heck (Phillipston, Mass.) split time in net to turn away 23 of Gordon's attempts on the night.

The Pride continues the search for their elusive first win on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Clark University.
