BURNS LATE GOAL PROPELS PRIDE PAST EXPRESS 2-1

WESTON, Mass.-The Regis College field hockey team defeated Wells College Saturday afternoon by the score of 2-1 The Pride moves to 1-6 overall on the season, while the visiting Express move to 3-4.

The Pride got on the board early when freshman Sashae Walls (Everett, Mass.) chipped in a short cross box pass from Christine O'Toole (Ashburnham, Mass.) to put the Pride 1-0. The Pride Rifled off nine more shots in the first period but could not convert. The Express defense was led by goal keeper Amanda Catalano (Lockport, N.Y.) who tallied three saves in the first period.

The second period opened with a flurry of shots from the Express, but Pride goalkeeper Genesiz Gudiel (Lawrence, Mass.) held strong tallying three saves. The Express continued to push the ball in the Pride's offensive end and found an open seam when Britney Stanton (Deposit, N.Y. ) broke through the Prides backfield and ripped a corner shot past Gudiel to even the score at 1-1.

The Pride would rally back with a series of penalty corners in the last five minutes of the second period. The Express held strong under the excellent play of Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.) who stopped a Cheyenne Genga (South Winsor, Conn.) shot to keep the game tied a 1-1. The Pride would quickly fire off another penalty corner with three minutes left in the second period, Sophomore Stacy Burns (Waltham Mass.) converted top corner off a crisp pass from Genga to make the score 2-1.

With no time remaining in the second period the Express were awarded a penalty corner and the chance to tie the game, but Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) sunk a shot wide to end the contest 2-1 in favor of the Pride.

The Crimson and Gold will return to play Tuesday when the team travels to Nashua New Hampshire to take on the Raiders from Rivier College. The Express return to action Sunday when they travel to Leicester, Massachusetts to take on the Hawks from Becker College at 11:00 a.m.
