WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College field hockey team fell to Framingham State University, 2-0, on Saturday morning in non-conference field hockey action in Weston, Mass. The Rams improve to 1-0 this season while the Pride drops to 0-1 on the young year. Framingham State's Kaitlyn Ranieri (Taunton, Mass.) and Sarah Giansanti (Flanders, N.J.) tallied goals for the visiting Rams.
Framingham State attacked the Regis defense early as the Rams posted four shots in the first six minutes of play, two of which were turned away by Regis' freshman netminder Genesiz Gudiel (Lawrence, Mass.). Following a Regis timeout, the Rams would finally break through as Kaitlyn Ranieri took a feed from Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) and gave FSU the early 1-0 lead. Meghan Robohm (Easton, Mass.) took the one shot for Regis in the first period while Framingham State had two more attempts but the score remained 1-0 headed into the half.
The Rams controlled the pace in the first half, outshooting the Pride 8-1, but Gudiel made five saves in the opening frame.
Framingham State wasted no time in the second period as the Rams added an insurance goal four minutes into the second half off the stick of Sarah Giansanti with Ranieri picking up an assist on the tally. Regis finally put together some offense as the Pride rattled off 14 straight shots, but unfortunately none of them found their mark as Sarah Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) made nine stops in the second period to help secure the 2-0 win.
The Pride outshot the Rams 14-3 in the second half and held a 15-11 edge for the entire game. The second half also saw a combined 16 penalty corners after none in the first period, with Regis leading in that category as well, 9-7. FSU's Sarah Ryan picked up her first win of the season by making nine stops while the Pride's Genesiz Gudiel falls to 0-1 this year.
Regis' Cheyenne Genga (South Windsor, Conn.) took a team-high five shots, four of which were on goal. Sashae Wells (Everett, Mass.) and Victoria Pappas (Niantic, Conn.) chipped in with three shots apiece while Katie Blackburn (Milford, Mass.) made a pair of defensive saves.
The Rams were paced by Kaitlyn Ranieri who scored a goal and added an assist. Giansanti added a goal on a pair of shots while Demi Miskiv added an assist and one shot. Kelli Timmins (Dedham, Mass.) picked up two defensive saves for the Rams while Emma Littlefield (Rockport, Mass.) also added one of her own.
The Cardinal and Gold return to action on Thursday night when the Pride travel to Mount Holyoke for a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m. Framingham State looks to build on its first win of the year when it hosts the University of New England on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
