SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College field hockey team captured their first win of the season by topping Regis College 2-0 in both teams TCCC opener on Saturday night (Sept. 11).
Senior midfielder Erin Griffin (Lowell, MA) notched the first
goal of the game in the second period off of a penalty corner, she
was assisted by sophomore defender Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth,
CT). The Golden Bears would again take advantage of a penalty
corner, this time senior forward Aimee O'Connell (Rome, NY) hit the
back of the cage on an assist from Van Huysen.
WNEC was on the attack throughout, holding a decided 45 to three
advantage in shots and a 16 to six edge in penalty corners.
Regis College freshman goaltender Morgan Mitchell
(Ashburnham, MA) was outstanding for the Pride, stopping 32
shots. WNEC goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall (Pawtucket, RI) earned
the shutout while recording three saves.
The Golden Bears improve to 1-2 (1-0 TCCC) with the victory, while
the Pride move to 1-2 (0-1 TCCC) with the setback.
Western New England College returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 12)
at 1:00 p.m. to take on Castleton State College in non-conference
action at Golden Bear Stadium.
