EQUALLY MATCHED OPPONENTS LOOK FOR FIRST WIN OF 2010

WESTON, Mass.—Regis College Field Hockey opened its 2010 season with a 3-0 loss to Simmons (Sept. 6), and will return to the field against an almost identical Elms College program September 8 at 7:00 p.m.

The Elms College website posted a story (Sept. 7, "Field Hockey Will Rely On Its Competitiveness in 2010") saying that Elms will essentially rely on its degree of competitive drive to win games this season. With its first match being against Regis, who is coming off a loss, Elms might need some courage to stand on the field with a feisty Pride program.
Both teams carry a full roster of approximately 12 players, return just under five players from 2009, and welcome a slew of incoming student-athletes. What will be important in Wednesday's match-up will be who possess the ball in the others territory, and able to take the greatest number of shots on goal.
Regis managed just one shot on goal against Simmons, and gave up three total goals. Albeit the least number of goals allowed since 2009, any goal allowed is too many when the team does not score in return.
Victoria Pappas (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) and Meghan Robohm (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) are the team captains, and need to position their players for high percentage shots on Elms sophomore goalkeeper Alexandria Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.).

Regis' keeper Morgan Mitchell (Ashburnham, Mass./Oakmont Regional) had 22 saves Monday, and you could see the talent she will own with more experience. It is her defensive line that will need to limit the number of opponents that creep into the crease for potential scores.

Expect the Regis trio to seek its first win against an equal opponent. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start on the Regis Athletic Fields.
