Regis Women’s Volleyball Falls in 2021 Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Regis College women's volleyball team lost to WPI, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-12), Wednesday night in the season opener for both squads at Harrington Auditorium.

Ahnasia Mckinney (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Kamdyn Tenorio (Irvine, Calif.) led the Pride offensively with three kills apiece, with Karly Sanborn (Gilmanton, N.H.) dishing out a team-high seven assists. Mckinney also picked up a solo block, and Mica van der Meulen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) paced the backline with 11 defensive digs.

WPI (1-0) jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set, but Regis put together a 7-2 scoring run to tie the set at 12-12. The Engineers responded with a 9-1 scoring stretch to retake the lead and eventually win the opening set.

The home team held a tenuous lead throughout the second set, with the Pride taking advantage of WPI miscues to close to within one at 19-18. However, the Engineers capped off the set with six straight points, punctuated by consecutive service aces from Catherine Reynolds and a kill by Paige Garland.

The Pride scored three of the first four points of the third set, but WPI took control with eight straight points to pull ahead, 13-7. The Engineers finished off the set and the match by scoring nine of the final 10 points, with Garland clinching the contest on a service ace.

Amanda Wetmore led the Engineers with 18 kills and a .441 hitting percentage, while Reynolds finished with 24 assists and three service aces. Defensively, Jia Yazon collected 12 digs to lead all players in the match.

Regis (0-1) heads north to Henniker, N.H., to face New England College next Tuesday, Sept. 7, starting at 6 p.m.
