REGIS DOWNS BLAZERS IN FOUR SETS

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College improved to 2-1 in the New England Collegiate Conference with a 3-1 victory over Elms College on Wednesday night in NECC women's volleyball action. The Pride improve to 9-16 overall with the win, while the Blazers drop to 5-14 and 1-3 in league games.

In game one, Regis jumped out to an early 6-3 lead after back-to-back kills from Kristina del Rey (Miami, Fla.) and pushed their lead to 9-4 following a del Rey service ace. The Blazers climbed back into the game on a JC Pickett (Chicopee, Mass.) service ace as well as a few Pride errors and a kill from Christine Searles (Tolland, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 10-9. Kristina del Rey made it a 15-11 game with another kill, and the Pride later led by as many as seven in the opening set as Regis held on for a 25-19 win.

The Pride again jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the second set following a Sara Gold (North Hollywood, Calif.) ace, but the Blazers turned it into a back-and-forth affair as they tied the score at 13-all on a Pickett kill. Shannon Bolton (Shelton, Conn.) gave the Blazers an 18-16 lead with an ace, but Regis scored four-straight points, including a block and a kill from Vanessa Noesi (Puerta Plata, D.R.), to put the home team back on top 20-18. Elms battled back to tie the score at 23, and the teams traded errors to make it a 24-24 game. Back-to-back kills from Searles and Alex Mack (Wilbraham, Mass.) sealed the game two win for Elms, 26-24.

Searles and Bolton combined for a block followed by a Rachel Cowan (Ellington, Conn.) service ace to give Elms an early 11-8 lead in the third game. The Pride's Sam Bliss (Framingham, Mass.) stepped to the service line after a kill and served on eight-straight points as a part of a 9-0 run for Regis that put them on top 17-11. Elms answered again, scoring six points in a row of their own, to tie the score at 17-all and force a Pride timeout.

Regis led late in the game, 23-20 on another Noesi kill, but three-straight points from the visitors tied the game at 23-23. On the ensuing Regis possession, Marilia Ramos (Chimbote, Peru) used a nifty dump pass into the center of the Elms defense to give the Pride a 24-23 lead and Noesi ended the game with a block to stake the Pride to a 25-23 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The final set was all Regis as they took a 15-1 lead to open the fourth game and never looked back, clinching the match with a 25-9 win in the final set. Noesi and Jackie Silver (West Hills, Calif.) each posted three kills in the final game.

Noesi led the Pride with 11 kills on the day and added four blocks. Kristina del Rey joined her in double-digit kills with 10, while Jackie Silver added seven of her own. Marilia Ramos posted a double-double of 29 assists and 12 digs, and Sara Gold led all players with 20 digs on the night.

Elms was led by 11 kills and 10 digs from Alex Mack and eight kills apiece from JC Pickett and Rachel Cowan. Shannon Bolton dished out a team-best 29 assists and added nine digs, while Caitlyn Larvey (Greenfield, Mass.) led the Blazer defense with 14 digs.

Both teams return to NECC action on Saturday afternoon as Regis travels to Daniel Webster for a 12:00 p.m. game and Elms travels to Newbury College for a match at the same time.
