Women’s Tennis Falls Short of GNAC Title

WINCHESTER, Mass. - Regis College provided Colby-Sawyer College with its toughest battle from a conference opponent this year, but the Chargers were able to prevail, 5-3, to win the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Tennis Tournament Saturday evening at the Winchester Tennis Club.

The Pride won two of the three doubles sets to take a 2-1 lead, starting with the duo of Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) and Harmony Lopez (Carlsbad, N.M.) at number two doubles with an 8-5 victory. At number one doubles, Stephanie Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) and Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) went to a tiebreaker with Grace Carpenter and Elise Hogan, with Beatrice and Thompson earning the victory, 8-7, to put Regis on top heading into singles.

Colby-Sawyer (8-4-1) quickly pulled ahead with three singles victories. Thompson defeated Carpenter at number one singles in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to keep the Pride alive. Lopez won the first set at number three singles, but she lost the next two sets as Maria Espinosa Lopez clinched the match for the Chargers (3-6, 6-3, 6-1). At number four singles, Gevry battled back from dropping the first set to win the second set, but the match was halted in the third set when the decision was reached.

Lopez and Thompson were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances in both the semifinals and the championship match.

Regis College (6-4) will play a spring schedule to be determined. The postseason GNAC honors are scheduled to be announced Tuesday, Oct. 24.
