Pride Women’s Tennis Loses to Simmons

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College took a 2-1 lead after doubles, but Simmons University won five of six singles matches to earn a 6-3 victory over the Pride Wednesday evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's tennis match at the Regis Tennis Courts.

The Pride jumped on top thanks to convincing victories by Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) at number one doubles (8-0) and Harmony Lopez (Carlsbad, N.M.) and Stephanie Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) at number two doubles (8-1). At number three doubles, the team of Sophi Machado (Hopedale, Mass.) and Akshita Duvvuri (Chennai, India) battled Emma Parsons and Laura Lowe before the Simmons duo prevailed, 8-5.

Parsons won her match at number six singles in straight sets without losing a game to tie the match, and then Lowe dropped just one game in her straight-set victory at number five singles to give the Sharks the lead. Emilie Lapointe extended the Simmons lead with her straight-set win at number one singles over Beatrice.

Gevry kept the Pride in the match with a straight-set win over Emily Lopez at number three singles (6-1, 6-1), but Megan Baadsgaard clinched the victory for Simmons with a straight-set win at number two singles over Lopez. Machado battled at number four singles, taking the second set to a tiebreaker, but Sara Fucillo was able to complete the straight-set victory.
