Regis Pride Tennis Sweeps GNAC Weekly Awards

WINTHROP, Mass. – After dominating performances over the past week in defeating league rivals Simmons University and Eastern Nazarene College, Regis College swept the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly women's tennis awards as graduate student Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) was named GNAC Player of the Week and first-year student Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) earned GNAC Rookie of the Week honors for the fourth consecutive week, announced Monday, Sept. 26, by the league office.

Mogelnicki is now seventh in Regis history with 37 career singles wins and sixth in program history with 37 career doubles victories. Against Simmons, she teamed with Stephanie Beatrice to prevail in a tiebreaker in doubles before clinching the match for the Pride with her straight-set singles win over Vanessa Camargo (6-4, 6-1). Saturday, Mogelnicki and Beatrice handed ENC's Maria Busila and Eilym Gomez their first doubles loss (8-3), and then Mogelnicki cruised to a straight-set singles win over Jenna Schlosser without losing a single game (6-0, 6-0).

Thompson remained undefeated for the season with victories in both conference matches, improving to 6-0 in singles and 6-0 in doubles. She teamed with Samantha Gevry in both contests for wins at number one doubles, defeating Avery Halloran and Olga Zhizhin of Simmons Wednesday, 8-2, and Kari Bollinger and Katie Cawthorne of Eastern Nazarene Saturday, 8-4. In singles against Zhizhin of Simmons, Thompson won in straight sets without losing a game (6-0, 6-0), and then she defeated Maria Busila of Eastern Nazarene (6-1, 6-3).

Mogelnicki, a two-time First Team All-GNAC selection, earns her first career GNAC Player of the Week award, although she was a two-time GNAC Rookie of the Week honoree in 2018. Thompson becomes the first player to earn GNAC Rookie of the Week honors at least four times since Emily Hill of Johnson and Wales was a six-time Rookie of the Week in 2019.

Regis College (5-1, 3-0 GNAC) will host Colby-Sawyer College, also undefeated in conference play at 3-0, Saturday, Oct. 1, starting at 12 p.m. at the Regis Tennis Courts on campus.
