Women’s Tennis Loses Heartbreaker to Simmons

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College rallied from an early deficit to tie Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's tennis match, but Simmons University pulled out the win in the final singles contest on the court for a 5-4 victory at the Regis Tennis Courts.

The Pride started to close their deficit in the singles matches when Kaeleigh FitzPatrick (South Windsor, Conn.) won her contest in straight sets without losing a game, followed by a straight-set win for fellow senior Lauren Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.). Sarah Mariski would pick up another point for the Sharks at number three singles, but Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) and Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) would win their matches to tie the overall competition at 4-4.

At number five singles, Megan McKeever won the first set, but Kaitlyn Colby (Merrimac, Mass.) came back to take the second set and force a deciding third set. The final set would come down to a tiebreaker, where McKeever prevailed to clinch the three-set victory (6-4, 0-6, 7-6) and give the Sharks the conference win.

The Sharks would win all three doubles sets, starting with an 8-3 decision for Leah Bonis and Libby Weed in the third position. Both the number one and number two doubles contests were tight, with the Simmons duos of Mariski and McKeever and Olga Zhizhin and Avery Halloran posting 8-6 victories.
