PRIDE GETS PAST NIGHTHAWKS 5-4

WESTON,Mass.-The Newbury College women's tennis team dropped the season series to Regis College, 5-4, at The Mount Auburn Tennis Club in New England Collegiate
Conference (NECC) action, Thursday afternoon. Before the match, the
Nighthawks honored senior Kristen Conners  (Riverside, R.I.), who was
competing in her final home match of her collegiate career, for her four
years of dedication to the program.

Conners, who had 15 career doubles victories to start the day, opened up the
afternoon with her doubles partner junior Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack,
N.H.) and defeated the Pride tandem of Elora Granados (Chillcothe, Texas)
and Paige Pasley (Dorchester, Mass.), 8-4. Juniors Alexandra
Derderian (North Smithfield, R.I.) and
Julie MacLeod  (Buffalo, N.Y.) followed suit claiming another 8-4 victory
in second singles, holding off  MJ Barron (Whitinsville, Mass.) and Kendall
Kolb (Plymouth, Mass.).

Once again MacLeod was paired with freshman Vanneyra Chum  (Lowell, Mass.)
in fourth singles and for the second time this season she came away with the
win despite Chum taking the Upstate New York native to three sets after
falling down, 6-1 in the first set. Swafford picked up the fourth victory
for the Nighthawks as she kept Regis second year Caroline Roche  (Hanover,
Mass.) off balance in second singles.

But it was not enough to pull out their second victory of the season.
Grandados used just two sets to defeat Conners in first singles while Barron
held off Derderian in third singles.

The loss drops Newbury to 1-12 on the season and 1-7 in the NECC while Regis
moves back to .500 on the season in the conference and 4-7 overall. The
Nighthawks will return to the courts tomorrow afternoon when against
Mitchell College on the road in New London, Conn. at 3:00 p.m. while the
Pride will also see the Mariners in their next match on Saturday October 15.
