REGIS GRABS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 5-4 win over Newbury College on Wednesday night in New England Collegiate College action. The Pride improves to 1-5 this season and 1-2 in the NECC while the Nighthawks drop to 0-6 and 0-2 in league play. Mary Jane Barron (Whitinsville, Mass.) captured the deciding point for Regis with her 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory at number three singles.

Newbury jumped out to an early 2-1 lead following doubles play as Kristen Connors (Riverside, R.I.) and Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, N.H.) posted an 8-3 victory at number one doubles for the Nighthawks. Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, R.I.) and Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, N.Y.) grabbed the second point for Newbury in doubles play with an 8-1 win over Barron and Vanneyra Chum (Lowell, Mass.). Newbury was forced to forfeit the final doubles match due to a lack of players.

In singles play, Elora Granados (Chillicothe, Texas) continued her strong start to the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Conners in number one singles. Jennifer Swafford posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Caroline Roche (Hanover, Mass.) in number two doubles while Julie MacLeod grabbed the other point for the Nighthawks at number four singles. Kendall Kolb (Plymouth, Mass.) captured the fourth point of the day for the Pride with her win at number five singles while a Newbury forfeit in number six singles left the match knotted at four apiece. Mary Jane Barron fell in the first set, 3-6, to Alexandria Derderian but rebounded in the second, 6-2, and followed that up with a 6-1 win in the tiebreak to secure a 5-4 win for Regis.

Regis looks to pick up its second win of the season on Saturday afternoon when the Pride hosts Mitchell in another NECC match at 12:00 p.m. Newbury continues the search for its first win when it hosts Mount Ida on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
