Women’s Soccer Earns GNAC Road Victory at Simmons

BRIGHTON, Mass. – After allowing an early goal, Regis College increased its offensive pressure, scoring once in each half to defeat Simmons University, 2-1, Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Daly Field.

In the 26th minute, Regis drew a corner kick opportunity when Hailey Lovell (Wakefield, Mass.) drove the ball up the field and forced a Simmons defender to kick it over the end line. Allison Meade (Stoneham, Mass.) sent the ball into the box, and Alexa Katsoulis (Oxford, Mass.) used her height advantage to head the ball into the net for her second goal of the season.

Close to midway through the second half, the Pride maintained possession of the ball in the Shark defensive zone. Emma Nunnemacher (West Boylston, Mass.) corralled a rolling ball on the right side of the field and chipped a shot over the goalkeeper's head into the net for her third goal of the season as well as her first career game-winning tally.

Daniela Mazo (Bridgeport, Conn.) entered the match in net at the start of the second half and made two saves in the span of two minutes on shots by Kristina Reed and Izabella Warren right before Nunnemacher's go-ahead goal. Mazo also interrupted a Shark scoring chance late in the match as she picked up her second victory of the season.

Simmons (2-10-2, 1-7-1 GNAC) struck first in the 22nd minute as Emma McEwan beat Regis starting goalie Cassidy Van Cott (Santa Monica, Calif.) to an entry pass and slid it into the net to give the Sharks the early lead. However, the Pride quickly ramped up its offensive pressure and never let up, outshooting the home team 23-5, including a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Marita Nothacker kept the Sharks in the match as she collected 12 saves, including eight saves in the second half. Lovell led the Pride with seven total shots, followed by Meadow Comeiro (Woburn, Mass.) with five shots.

For the fourth time in the history of the program, Regis has reached seven conference victories with four matches remaining to establish a new school record for league wins in a single season.

Regis College (8-4-1, 7-2 GNAC) hosts Elms College Saturday, Oct. 15, beginning at 4 p.m.
