Pride Downed by Newbury in Regular Season Finale

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - A fifth minute goal scored by Nighthawks junior Shannon Walsh (Massapequa, N.Y.) would be the only tally of the match, as the Newbury Nighthawks defeated the Regis (Mass.) Pride, 1-0, on a frigid, Wednesday afternoon at Pine Manor College on Senior Day.

Early in the first half, a loose ball, at the top of the Pride penalty area, found Walsh. Amongst a crowd of defenders and teammates, Walsh controlled the bouncing ball and on the half-volley struck it into the top right corner of the goal for her 13th goal of the season; a new career-high.

The goal also gives Walsh five game-winning goals on the season; a new Nighthawks program record for game-winning goals in a season.

The Pride had their chances, none better than an opportunity with three minutes remaining. A foul on the Nighthawks gave Regis' Jenna Novio (Rockland, Mass.) a free kick from 30 yards out. Novio chose to go for goal and the resulting shot off the free kick was just high over the crossbar.

Sophomore Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) got the victory for the Nighthawks, recording her fifth shutout of the season, adding to her program record total. Sass improves to 7-7-0 in her seven save clean sheet. For the Pride, Amanda Matias (Ludlow, Mass.) played solidly, but get credited with the loss, downing her record to 6-5-1, in her six save outing.

This concludes the regular season for the two sides, who now turn their attention to the NECC Playoffs starting on Saturday. The brackets and times for all matches are to be determined, in coordination with the NECC.
