Pride Tops Suffolk in Non-Conference Showdown

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) women's soccer team nabbed their second consecutive win on Thursday night, as they topped the Rams of Suffolk University by a score of 2-1.

With the win, the Pride improves to 3-2-0 on the season, while Suffolk falls to 3-2-0.

The teams went into halftime without a goal, but Regis freshman Noelle Garcia (Los Angeles, Calif.) had the best chance of the half. In the 20th minute, the midfielder unleashed a shot from 25 yards out that nailed the crossbar, but ricocheted over the top of the net. It was the first of three posts hit by the Pride on the evening.

Regis junior Tais Salles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) opened the scoring in the 58th minute with her second goal in as many games. The forward snuck away on a breakway before tapping it past charging Suffolk keeper Kirsten Weiker (Durham, N.H.) to make it 1-0.

It appeared that might be the game's only tally, until Regis freshman Erin Filetti (Newburyport, Mass.) pounced on a rebound in the 88th minute to make it 2-0 late. Garcia took a free kick from 25 yards and ripped a knuckleball that evaded Weiker's grasp. Filetti came charging in from the far side of the field and buried what turned out to be the game winning goal.

Just 22 seconds after Filetti's goal, Suffolk junior forward Alexandra Nagri (Salem, N.H.) found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season to keep things interesting late. Pride goalkeeper Amanda Matias (Ludlow, Mass.) was able to get her fingertips on Nagri's high shot from distance, but not quite enough, as she lost her clean sheet with just 2:21 remaining.

Matias finished the game with three saves to earn her second win of the season in net, while her counterpart Weiker took the loss while making five stops.

Next up for the Pride is their NECC opener against Elms on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Regis Stadium. Suffolk next takes the pitch on Saturday as well, when they host St. Joseph (Conn.) at 1:00 p.m.
