Three Quick Goals Sink Women's Soccer

WESTON, Mass. - Three goals in a span of 3:20 at the beginning of the second half were all that it took on Saturday afternoon, as the Regis (Mass.) women's soccer team fell to Framingham State 3-0 in non-conference play. Sophomore midfielder Kayla Almstrom (Auburn, Mass.) led the way for the Rams with two goals and an assist.

With the loss, Regis falls to 1-2 on the season, while Framingham State improves to 1-2.

The teams played a tightly contested first half and went into the break in a scoreless tie. The best chance of the opening half came in the 36th minute, when Pride forward Michaela Bouvette (Mattapoisett, Mass.) snuck clear of the Framingham State defense and tried chipping goalkeeper Keyonzia Gagne-Lamoureux (East Brookfield, Mass.), but the sophomore came up with an impressive fingertip stop to keep the game scoreless.

Almstrom broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute, when she tidied up a rebound to make it 1-0 Rams. The original shot by freshman Jana Paecht (Holliston, Mass.) by denied by Regis keeper Amanda Matias (Ludlow, Mass.), but the ball bounced right to the right foot of Almstrom, and she netted her first goal of the season.

Almstrom wasn't done, however, as she netted her second of the day just 2:53 later. After working the ball into a tight angle to the right of the net, the midfielder fired a daring shot that found the net to double the Ram lead.

Almstrom was credited with an assist 27 seconds later when senior Meghan Kenny (Danvers, Mass.) ripped a shot from deep over the head of Matias to stretch the lead to 3-0, a score that would hold as the final score.

Gagne-Lamoureux earned the win, making three saves, while Matias picked up the loss, despite making five saves.

The Pride will return to the pitch when they travel to Anna Maria on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Framingham State's next game comes on Wednesday when they host Keene State College at 4:00 p.m.
