Zancan, Gonzalez Collect More NEWBA Weekly Honors

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Regis College women's basketball program continues to be represented within the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) weekly honors, as Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) has been named NEWBA Rookie of the Week for the second straight time, and Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) has been selected to the weekly NEWBA Second Team for the fourth time this season.

Zancan averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game last week as the Pride extended their winning streak to six games, the team's longest winning streak in six years. After scoring eight points at Norwich Jan. 26, Zancan shot 5-for-7 from the field and 10-for-13 from the free throw line for a game-high 20 points, including nine straight points in the second quarter to help Regis establish its largest lead of the day.

For the season, Zancan is now averaging 13.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game. She is third in the GNAC in blocks per game as well as 24th in Division III in field goal percentage at 54.2 percent (90-for-166). She has scored at least 20 points in four of the last five games, shooting 62.3 percent (38-for-61) from the field in that span.

Gonzalez averaged 16.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 4.0 steals per game in Regis's victories over Norwich and Johnson & Wales last week. She notched her 25th career double-double last Thursday against the Cadets with 14 points and 11 rebounds, plus she earned three assists and three steals.

Less than two minutes into Saturday's game against the Wildcats, in front of an enthusiastic crowd anticipating the moment, Gonzalez hit a three-pointer to become the 18th player in Regis women's basketball history to score at least 1,000 career points, including the eighth player to accomplish the milestone within the first three seasons of her collegiate career.  She finished the game with 18 points, eight rebounds, and five steals.

Both Gonzalez and Zancan were also included on this week's GNAC Honor Roll. Gonzalez, the GNAC Player of the Week Jan. 16, was previously selected to the NEWBA weekly honor roll Nov. 23, Jan. 10, and Jan. 17, while Zancan received both GNAC and NEWBA Rookie of the Week recognition last week as well as GNAC Rookie of the Week honors Dec. 5.

Regis College (9-9, 9-3 GNAC), currently in second place in the GNAC South Division, hosts GNAC North Division schools Anna Maria Thursday, Feb. 2, at 5 p.m. and Colby-Sawyer Saturday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m. The Anna Maria game will serve as the celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, featuring poster making before the game and girls from the Regis College Children's Center joining the Pride for the National Anthem and introduction of starting lineups.
