Madi Zancan Receives NEWBA Rookie of Week Honors

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - First-year forward Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) has been named the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Rookie of the Week after scoring over 20 points in three consecutive road victories for Regis College, as the NEWBA weekly honors were announced Tuesday evening, Jan. 24.

Zancan averaged 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 3.0 blocks per game last week to lead the Pride to a 3-0 record as they increased their winning streak to four games. She shot 66.7 percent (30-for-45) from the floor during the week and is now 21st in all of Division III in field goal percentage for the season at 54.7 percent.

At Lasell Jan. 17, Zancan scored a season-high 27 points on 11-for-17 field goal shooting, plus she grabbed 10 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, for her second double-double of the season and blocked three shots. Last Thursday, she scored 11 of her team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter as Regis defeated USJ to move past the Blue Jays into second place in the GNAC South Division.

Saturday at Elms, she went 11-for-14 from the field, her best field goal shooting performance of the season with at least 10 attempts, to finish with 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals, and four blocked shots. Zancan has now made at least half of her field goal attempts in 13 games this season, reaching double figures in scoring eight times.

Zancan, a two-time GNAC Rookie of the Week, becomes the first Regis player to collect a major NEWBA weekly award since Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) was named NEWBA Rookie of the Week for the third time Jan. 28, 2020. This season, Gonzalez has been included on the NEWBA weekly honor roll three times.

Due to potential travel issues from a significant snowstorm forecast for Wednesday, the scheduled GNAC contest between Regis (7-9, 7-3 GNAC) and Norwich (8-8, 4-5 GNAC) has been postponed until Thursday, Jan. 26, starting at 7 p.m. The Pride then begin a five-game homestand against Johnson and Wales Saturday, Jan. 28, with tipoff set for 3 p.m.
