Women's Basketball Defeated by #1 Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team was unable to match the nation's top-ranked team on Saturday afternoon, falling to Tufts University by a score of 81-41 at Cousens Gymnasium.

Lauren Dillon had 11 points and went a perfect 3-for-3 from three. Gina Doyle had nine points, while Emily Briggs and Melissa Baptista had eight. In total, ten different players scored for the home team.Jac Knapp led the way for the second game in a row for the Jumbos (2-0). She totaled 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while going 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. She also led the team with five assists and was tied for the team lead with five steals.

Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) from Regis (0-2) had a game high in both points and rebounds, with 20 points and 10 boards. Maura Russell (Braintree, Mass.) was next for the visitor with eight points.

Tufts opened the game with an explosive first quarter. They led 28-9 after the frame. The Jumbos hit four 3-pointers in the opening quarter and muscled their way to 16 points in the paint. The teams went into halftime with Tufts up, 49-17.

The Jumbos opened the second half on a 12-2 run off of points from Baptista and Knapp. In the fourth quarter, Tufts was outscored 11-13, but the game was already in hand. Gina Doyle hit two of her three 3-pointers in the final frame and Dillon added another. Stone had six of Regis' 13 points in the quarter.

Up next for the Jumbos they travel to Emerson this Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Regis will play at Westfield State on the same day.
