WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) athletics department will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at the women's basketball game versus UMass Dartmouth.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day, observed on Wednesday, Feb. 1 is a day reserved to reflect on the evolution of women in sports, with the purpose of encouraging young athletes to explore and learn about the rich history that has been created by female athletes over the last several decades.

"We are thrilled to be part of celebrating National Girls and Women In Sports Day," said women's basketball coach Angela Santa Fe. "It is my hope that our strong women athletes inspire future generations of young girls to not only participate in sports, but to dream big."

Several Regis community youth groups will join the Pride on the court at 5:45 p.m. for pre-game ceremonies and the playing of the National Anthem, as well as a fun game for young children at halftime. In addition, there will be T-shirts, bracelets, and a coloring and sticker station will all be part of the fun. Embracing the theme of "Play Like a Girl," young girls will be able to express their thoughts on this theme by writing them on a special poster.

Also, fans will have the opportunity to share photos of important female role models in their lives by tweeting at @GoRegisPride to have their photo shared on Feb. 1.

NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to honor Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman, a world-class athlete who helped the United States women's volleyball team win a silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Hyman used her notoriety to set an example of community involvement while significantly enhancing the opportunities for girls and women in sport. Following Hyman's sudden passing while playing volleyball in Japan in 1986, NGWSD continues to evolve into a celebration of the past and recognition of current achievements for girls and women in sport.
