Pride Stays Perfect in NECC with Win Over Newbury

WESTON, Mass. - Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) led all scorers with 20 points on Saturday afternoon as the Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team cruised to an 85-36 victory over the Nighthawks of Newbury College in New England Collegiate Conference play.

With the win, the Pride snaps out of a four-game losing streak and improves to 5-5 (4-0 NECC) on the season. Newbury sees its record fall to 1-8 (1-3 NECC) with the loss.

Strong rebounding in the opening half allowed the Pride to take a 38-18 lead into the half. Led by 10 offensive rebounds in the opening 20 minutes, the home team outrebounded Newbury 27-13 before the break.

Regis continued to control the play in the second half, as Stone's eight points in the third quarter paced the Pride as they outscored the visitors 22-6 in the frame.

The final quarter saw the Pride light up the floor from beyond the arc, as the team combined to shoot 6-for-9 from three in the quarter to close out the win. Freshman Sydney Brennan (North Reading, Mass.) led the Pride with three of the three-pointers to finish the game with a career-high nine points.

Newbury was led offensively by junior forward Destiny Spears (Arnold, Md.), who capped off her night with a double-double with 15 points and a team-high 10 boards. Her teammate, sophomore Savannah Olsen (Battle Creek, Mich.) finished just shy of a double-double, totaling 11 points and nine rebounds.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday night with NECC matchups. The Pride hosts Bay Path University at 6:00 p.m., while the Nighthawks host Southern Vermont at 5:30 p.m.
