STONE, HAWKESWORTH POWER REGIS TO CONFERENCE WIN

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College received double-doubles from Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Amanda Hawkesworth (Abington, Mass.) to help lead the Pride to a 72-49 victory over Newbury College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action. The Pride improve to 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the NECC, while Newbury drops to 3-7 and 2-2 in league games.

Stone netted a career-best 23 points to go with 10 rebounds and three blocks, while Hawkesworth added 12 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists as the Pride outrebounded the Nighthawks, 64-42 in the game.

Regis jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before Newbury answered with a 4-1 spurt to make it an 8-6 game with 14:07 to play. The Pride responded with a run of their own as Brittany Stone scored five points during an 11-0 run to give the home team a 19-6 lead and force a Newbury timeout.

Out of the break, Jovanna Sandifer (Boston, Mass.) connected on a three, and after a pair of Linsay Bumila (Raynham, Mass.) freebies, Janetis Cardona (Southbridge, Mass.) buried another triple for Newbury to make it a 21-12 contest. An 8-0 run by Regis pushed their lead to 29-12 before Destiny Spears (Arnold, Md.) entered the scoring column for NC to end the streak. The Pride closed the half scoring 12 of the final 16 points to take a commanding 41-18 lead into the break.

Brittany Stone led Regis at the half with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Amanda Hawkesworth netted 10 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists. Cardona led the Nighthawks with seven points, with Destiny Spears snaring a team-best seven boards.

The Pride maintained their advantage throughout the second half, extending their lead to as many as 43 points, cruising to the 72-29 victory over Newbury and improving to a perfect 4-0 in NECC league games.

Teresa Busiek (Arlington, Mass.) nearly had a double-double of her own with seven points and 10 rebounds to help the Regis cause. 10 of the 12 players who checked into the game for the Pride scored at least two points, while all 12 had at least one rebound. The Pride recorded 19 assists on 25 field goals, but only shot 35.2% (25-of-71) for the game.

Newbury was paced by 12 points from Janetis Cardona, while Jovanna Sandifer joined her in double-figures with 10 points. Destiny Spears corralled a game-high 13 rebounds in the setback. The Nighthawks struggled from the floor, shooting 14.5% (9-of-62) from the field and committing 16 turnovers.

The Crimson and Gold return to action on Tuesday night when they host Bay Path University in an NECC matchup at 6:00 p.m. Newbury will try and get back on track that night as well, hosting Southern Vermont College in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
