Regis Falls in Doubleheader to Lasell

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College lost both games of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball doubleheader to Lasell University, 8-0 and 9-0, Sunday afternoon at the Regis Softball Field.

GAME ONE: LASELL 8, REGIS 0

The Lasers opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Emily Mestas and Emily Rondeau earned consecutive singles. With two outs, Eryn Sheeley sent a single to right field that allowed Mestas to come around and score.

Mestas drew a leadoff walk in the third inning, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and hustled home on an infield single by Katie Hopkins. The Lasers scored four times in the fourth inning, including a two-run single by Hopkins.

In the top of the fifth inning, Shyanne Raccio hit a one-out double to left-center field, and then Alyssa Bland reached base on a dropped third strike that also advanced Raccio to third base. A bunt single by Ally Kirck drove in Raccio, and a Regis error allowed Bland to come around and score.

Sheeley pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just two infield singles by Bianca Burke (Cambridge, Mass.) and a walk to Grace Motto (Wareham, Mass.). Sheeley threw 71 pitches, 45 of them for strikes, as she struck out five batters during the game.

GAME TWO: LASELL 9, REGIS 0

The first three innings went quickly as each team was limited to one hit through their first 10 batters. The Lasers broke through in the fourth inning as Mestas led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a double by Hopkins. Sheeley would drive in Hopkins with her own double to center field, and then Sheeley would score on a sacrifice fly to center field by Abigail Fortin.

The Lasers put the game away in the fifth inning with six runs, featuring a two-run single by Brianna Gendreau and a two-run triple by Hopkins. Hopkins would score on a Sheeley sacrifice fly, Lasell would load the bases, and Kirck would draw a walk to force in Fortin with the final run of the inning.

After allowing a leadoff single to Burke, Fortin retired the next 15 Regis batters in a row to notch the complete game shutout. She threw 61 pitches, 45 of them for strikes, as she collected five strikeouts during the game.
