Pride Softball Battles as The Spring Games Roll On

LEESBURG, Fla. – Regis College was defeated by Alvernia University and Hiram College at the Sleepy Hollow Field Monday afternoon.

GAME 1 - ALVERNIA 16, REGIS 3:

Alvernia started the first inning with an offensive advantage after walks were awarded to Alexia Fitzgerald and Taylor McClain. Alvernia first scored when Jaclyn Barbera grounded out to short stop and Fitzgerald earned the first run for the Golden Wolves. McClain scored on a passed ball, Tumasz scored after a fielding error by the Pride, and then two more unearned runs scored to give Alvernia the early lead, 5-0.

The Pride offense started strong with Bianca Burke (Cambridge, Mass.) earning a leadoff walk and then stealing second base. Mel Rees (Middleborough, Mass.) put the ball in play after hitting a line drive to center field for a single, with Burke advancing to third base. Unfortunately, the Pride finished the inning without any runs scoring thanks to a strikeout and groundout.

After the Golden Wolves scored in the top of the second inning, the Pride responded with Burke earning an RBI on a sacrifice fly to bring in Grace Motto (Wareham, Mass.).

After Alvernia earned five more runs in the top of the third inning, Avery Patles (Derry, N.H.) knocked a line drive to right field at the bottom of the third to bring in Rees and advance Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) to third. Motto singled to left field to drive in Zancan with the third run of the game for the Pride.

The Golden Wolves then earned five more runs to finish the game in five innings.

GAME 2 - HIRAM 9, REGIS 3:

Regis got the ball rolling early when Burke singled to right center and hustled to third base on a groundout. Rees drove her in on the next at-bat, slapping a single to right field to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.

For Hiram, Kylie Perez led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk and later scored ahead of Darian Kanno as she hit a home run over the fence in right-center field. After a scoreless second inning, Hiram added to its lead in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Abriana Schwartz.

The Pride responded in the fourth inning with Rees doubling to right center and later scoring after a fielding error from Hiram. After an unanswered inning from Hiram, the Pride put another on the board in the fifth inning as Mya Gaspie (Hooksett, N.H.) hit a one-out double to left-center field and came around to score on a single by Burke.

The Terriers broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning with five runs, featuring a two-run single by Schwartz and a two-run double by Angel Santellan. Kanno closed out the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning for the save, with Trinity Meza earning the victory after two innings of relief.
