Softball Splits Twinbill At Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Regis College softball team split a pair of contests versus Elms College in an New England Collegiate Conference a double header setup Thursday afternoon at the Cheryl R. Condon Field. The Blazers won, 2-1 during the first contest, then dropped a 5-2 score to close out the duo. Elms shifts to 14-17 on the season and 8-8 in conference action, while the Pride roll to 16-10 overall and 11-5 in NECC play.

Game 1: Elms 2, Regis 1 (7 Innings)

The Blazers came out swinging in the first tallying the first run of the contest early. The run was headed by aTaylor Skinner (South Windsor, Conn.) single to center field. From there Erin O'Donnell (Glenmont, NY.) connected for a single down the line to advance Skinner to second. Liz Olszewski (Canterbury, Conn.) ultimately brought in Skinner after sending a single to center field for Elms to collect the run.

The Blazers held the Pride off of home plate and were able to hold their 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth where Elms would bring in another tally. The stint began with an O'Donnell single to right center followed by a Catharine Wrang (Middletown, Conn.) single that brought O'Donnell home after a throwing error on the third baseman resulted in extra time for Elms.

The Pride collected their first and only run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh after Alissa Petillo (West Sayville, NY.) singled to center field advancing Katie Cuozzo (Lynn, Mass.) to second, Amanda Navarro(Stoneham, Mass.) to third, and sending Alyssa McKinnon (Rowley, Mass.) home for Regis. McKinnon had started off the cycle singling to shortstop to get on the bag.

The Blazers were led by Wrang with two hits and one RBI followed by Olszewski with one hit and one RBI for Elms.

Game 2: Regis 5, Elms 2

In game two, the Pride took control early snagging a quick 2-0 lead in the first off of a Kirbie Garvey (Littleton, Mass.) double that found a hole in the Blazers defense. From there Allison Calogerro (Medford, Mass.) doubled to center field bringing home Garvey. Regis closed out the stint with Navarro singling down the right field line enabling Calogerro the time to touch home plate.

The Pride held the Blazers off the board and collected another two runs during the fourth with Navarro scoring as well as Lisa Lusardi (Enfield, Conn.).

The Blazers eventually tabbed a run in the fifth as Wrang doubled to center field and was brought home by an O'Donnell single down the right field line to cut the deficit.

The Pride continued to rack in another run in the sixth after Michaela Najaime (Sandisfield, Mass.) singled to center field and Lusardi advanced to second pushing Navarro to score.

The Blazers kept pushing producing another run in the bottom of the sixth after Taylor Skinner singled bringing in Tessa Cote (Granby, Mass.) off of the second base bag, however despite Blazer efforts the Pride took the 5-2 victory.

Skinner and O'Donnell led Elms each collecting one hit and one RBI apiece.

The Blazers will return to action back home Saturday April 23rd at 12:00 p.m. for a conference matchup against Southern Vermont at Cheryl R. Condon Field. The Pride will play Becker away April 23rd for a 12PM start.
