SOFTBALL FOCUSED ON BRINGING DOWN HAWKS

Weston, Mass.—The walk was silent. Under a setting sun, not a sound was heard in the distance. Held within its cage the pride of lion’s roamed familiar territory. Its leader watched with a fierce and peering eye, correcting its young, preparing them for battle.

It was certainly a different atmosphere than normal while watching the Regis College softball team practice. Its leader, head coach Lisa LeVierge, has kept a fairly fierce eye on her team this season.

While at practice she was the only person you could hear, other than that familiar crack of the ball hitting the bat.

“They’re focused,” said assistant coach Stephanie Magni. Regis College (3-18, 1-5 TCCC) is certainly focusing on an area of interest for winning its upcoming doubleheader versus Roger Williams University.

Batting Out of a Hole...

Regis is in 13th place within the conference in team batting average (.214). Eastern Nazarene, with one conference win, is lower with a .209. Junior Shannon Hurley (Billerica, Mass.) is batting a team-high .382 in 25 games played.

Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Cailf.) and Molly Teixeira (Rindge, NH) round out the top three, batting .288 and .312 respectively in at least 23 games.

Luquet has posted 11 runs for Regis, with Teixira contributing nine. Hurley has put together the teams most doubles, slapping five thus far.

In 22 games played, Roger Williams is batting .280 as a team, and has hit 31 doubles compared to Regis’ 17. The Pride will have to keep the bat on the ball Friday, April 9. Regis has scored just 66 runs this season.

Oops…

Mistakes, actually errors, can happen to anyone, but they are happening to Regis more than any other conference school. The Pride is 11th, having committed 69 errors, but have 503 putouts.

Regis has to limit its errors in the field against Roger Williams. The Hawks are a middle-of-the-road batting team, per conference statistics, and can hurt Regis if they let Roger Williams turn solid hits into runs.

If keeping the fundamentals in mind and not letting the ball behind you is what it takes, then by all means Regis must do exactly that. Roger Williams offer the Pride a needed winnable conference game.

Not that success will be determined off of winning at least one of its two games, but winning one does offer a moral victory to Regis’ remaining stretch of doubleheaders.
