Marcello Cappuccio Named GNAC Defensive Player of Week

WINTHROP, Mass. - For the third time this season, senior libero Marcello Cappuccio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday, March 27, by the league office.

Cappuccio reached double figures in digs during all four Regis matches over the past week, averaging 3.79 digs per set in a 2-2 week. Last Tuesday, he collected 16 digs as the Pride swept Elms. Thursday, he finished with 15 digs and five assists against Eastern Nazarene, plus he made just one reception error on 29 receptions.

Saturday against Elms, Cappuccio did not make a reception error in 17 chances, plus he earned 11 digs as the Pride swept the Blazers again. He finished the day with another 11-dig performance against Emmanuel, his 10th match this season with 10 or more digs.

For the season, Cappuccio has collected 223 defensive digs, just 14 digs fewer than the total of 237 digs he posted last year in setting the Regis single-season record. He is currently second in the GNAC and eighth in Division III in digs per set at 3.23. He became the second player in program history to pass the 500-dig mark for his collegiate career, currently sitting with 517 career digs.

Regis College (8-13, 3-6 GNAC) enters another busy week, starting with a match at Dean Tuesday, March 28, beginning at 7 p.m. The Pride will then host Lasell Wednesday, March 29, starting at 7 p.m. as well as Emerson and Colby-Sawyer in a GNAC tri-match Saturday, April 1, commencing at 11 a.m. Cappuccio and fellow senior Donovan Ross (Southbridge, Mass.) will be recognized in a Senior Day presentation before the Colby-Sawyer match.
