Men's Volleyball Too Much For Southern Vermont

BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Regis (Mass.) men's volleyball team played its last-ever match in the Mountaineer Athletic Center as a member of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Wednesday night with the visiting Pride defeating Southern Vermont College 3-0. Set scores were 25-14, 25-18, and 25-14.

Southern Vermont (5-21, 2-9 NECC) now sets its sights on its final regular season match of the year—a 5:30 p.m. Saturday home affair against Lesley University that will be critical in the Mountaineers' attempt to garnering a playoff berth. Regis next heads to Endicott College on Saturday for a 3 p.m. start as the Pride will look to blemish the Gulls' undefeated Conference record.

Mountaineer freshman captain Bryan Bernal (Riverside, Calif.) led the team in kills with seven while adding 12 assists and nine digs to come a little shy of a triple-double. Classmate Te Hayward (Baltimore, Md.) followed with six kills, two digs and three blocks for SVC as junior Yonas Million (Rockville, Md.) and freshman libero Chris Jimenez (Newark, N.J.) added four digs apiece.

Regis senior Sean Bisnett (Oxnard, Calif.) tacked up a game-high 13 kills, and he also had three digs, three solo blocks and a pair of service aces on the night. Junior Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.) added nine kills, five aces and two digs while classmate Jeff Ramos (Pawtucket, R.I.) chalked up six kills and a team-best eight digs. Freshman setter Jayson Vega (Ponce, Puerto Rico) assisted on 31 of the Pride's 37 kills in the win.

Krahl served for four-straight aces early in the first for the Pride to take an 8-3 lead and force an SVC timeout. Vega followed with three more aces in-a-row, but Bernal notched three kills during a 5-0 Mountaineer run that cut it to three. Regis used a timeout and came out of it strong—Bisnett and Krahl each landing two kills to help their team go on top 19-12. Regis closed out the set with the final four points as Bisnett and Ramos teamed up for back-to-back kills to end it.

After the Mountaineers grabbed the first two points of the second game, Regis answered with a 12-2 run highlighted by kills from five Pride members. A kill by SVC senior Jeff James (Bowie, Md.) made it a 17-11 lead for Regis before the visitors won six of the next eight with four players notching kills. Southern Vermont went on a late 5-1 run with Hayward and sophomore Marv Figaro (New York City, N.Y.) each putting down a kill. It would not be enough, however, as a final kill by Regis junior Christopher Fitta (Warwick, R.I.) gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the match.

Regis controlled the third from the start as the Pride opened the set with a 15-3 lead; four Pride players had multiple kills in that stretch with Krahl getting three. Southern Vermont took to a 5-1 spurt capped by a James kill, but the Pride were able to maintain their separation through the end of the game for the season sweep. Regis closed it out with four-straight points as Bisnett added his last kill before ripping across one final ace in the win.
