BOSTON - The Regis College men's volleyball team competed in a tri-match at the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon and was swept by the no. 14 ranked Leopards 3-0 and New Jersey City 3-0.The setbacks drop the Pride to 0-6 on the season.
Wentworth 3, Regis 0 (13-25, 16-25, 16-25)
Sophomore Sean Mullen (Longwood, Fla.) paced the Leopards with 10 kills and three service aces and junior Alex Potts (Niverville, N.Y.) hit .636 (7-0-11) as Wentworth snapped a two-match losing streak.
A pair of junior Jake Reed (Arvada, Colo.) service aces in the early going broke the only tie of the set. Regis pulled with one at 4-3, however the Leopards rolled off six straight points and took a 10-3 lead after a Mullen kill. The Pride would score four of the next five points to make it 11-7 after a sophomore Marco Aguirre (Norwalk, Calif.) kill but would get no closer as a 9-2 Wentworth run made it 20-9 and the Black & Gold took the set 25-13. Potts had four kills in the set and Mullen had three aces.
Wentworth led from start to finish in the second set, winning 25-16, with Mullen recording six kills and an ace and Reed adding five on nine swings (5-1-9). The Leopards closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the third set as Potts had three kills and two blocks and Mullen and freshman Jake Brown (Howell, N.J.) added two of his own. The set was tied at 1-all before four straight Wentworth points gave the hosts the lead for good.
Reed had six kills (6-1-13), six digs, and a pair of blocks while sophomore Jon Roat (Macedon, N.Y.) had six kills, two aces, and two blocks. Sophomore Kevin McPeek (Bethlehem, Pa.) had 29 assists and six digs.
Regis was led by seven kills from junior Sean Bisnett (Oxnard, Calif.) and six kills from sophomore Marcos Aguirre (Norwalk, Calif.). Freshman Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) had three kills and four blocks, and junior Joe Hanrahan (Coventry, R.I.) had 16 assists.
New Jersey City 3, Regis 0 (20-25, 21-25, 26-28)
Senior Daque Wilcox (Fredericksburg, Va.) paced the Gothic Knights with 13 kills while hitting .600 (13-1-20) and received six kills and 10 digs from Sheldon Coure (Redonodo Beach, Calif.) in the sweep of the Pride.
NJCU took the first set, which featured five ties and a pair of lead changes, 25-20. With the score tied at 14-all the Gothic Knights took the lead for good on a Regis serving error. The Pride would make it a 19-18 set on a Hanrahan kill; however NJCU scored six of the next eight points to close out the set. Wilcox hit .571 (4-0-7) and Coure hit .667 (2-0-3) in the set for NJCU while Regis was paced by Aguirre who had five kills on five swings.
The second set featured 11 ties and four lead changes with NJCU taking the lead for good at 19-18 after a Regis attack error. The Gothic Knights upped their lead to 23-19 and would take the set 25-21.Wilcox was a perfect 4-0-4 in the set and added a block while the Pride, which hit -.045 in the set, was led by three kills and two blocks from sophomore Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.).
Regis held the lead in the early part of the third set and took a 12-8 lead on a junior Jon Fuentes (Downey, Calif.) kill. NJCU clawed back and tied the set at 17-all on a Wilcox kill. The Gothic Knights took a 24-23 lead on a bad set by Hanrahan, however gave the point back on a service error. Wilcox recorded a kill to make it 25-24 before Beimel responded with a kill of his own. The two teams traded points one more time before a pair of Regis attack errors gave the Gothic Knights a 28-26 win.
Senior Kendall Tribbett (Swedesboro, N.J.) added five kills, eight assists, and a block for NJCU, which hit .321 as a team for the match. Freshman Erick Nascimento (Miami, Fla.) had 22 assists and a pair of aces. Aguirre had 11 kills for Regis while Bisnett added six and Krahl five.
Regis looks for their first win of 2016 on Tuesday when they travel to Daniel Webster College for their New England Collegiate Conference opener at 7:00 p.m.
