CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Regis College freshman Brett Kahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.) knocked down a match-high nine kills and swung .538 on the night to lead the Pride to a 3-0 win over Lesley University tonight in New England Collegiate Conference action at the Nicholas Athletic Center.
The Lynx (1-13, 0-5 NECC) held brief leads in all three sets, but failed to hang on as the Pride (4-13, 2-4 NECC) used set scores of 25-14, 25-13, and 25-18 to secure the three set sweep.
Freshman Ryan Conte (Oxnard, Calif.) added seven kills and four digs for the Pride while classmates Josiah Roque (Oxnard, Calif.) and Marcos Aguirre (Norwalk, Calif.) each added five kills for the visitors. Roque added a match-best nine digs to his line on the night while fellow first year Ryan Husher (Camarillo, Calif.) led all players with 29 assists while adding three kills of his own.
Lesley sophomores Tyler Burns (Newtown, Pa.) and Jacob DiDomenico (North Providence, R.I.) paced the hosts with six kills apiece while juniors Jess Cherry (Lancaster, Pa.) and Chris Barletta (Valrico, Fla.) finished with four and three kills, respectively. Junior C. Jay Sutton (Billerica, Mass.) led the Lynx with eight digs and Burns added five digs and one block to his line on the night. Sophomore setter Mitchel Ulacco (Winchester, Mass.) dished out a team-high 18 assists.
The Lynx fell behind 4-1 early in the opening set before using a 6-1 spurt, capped by a DiDomenico block at the net, to jump in front 7-5. The lead did not last long as the Pride scored the next five points to stake a 10-7 edge that they would not relinquish. With the score 13-11, the Pride took control with a 7-0 streak before taking the first set 25-14. Krahl was perfect in the opener as he connected for four kills on four attempts to lead the Regis offense.
The Lynx again held an early lead in the second as a Cherry spike gave the hosts a 6-4 advantage before a Krahl kill sparked a 7-1 run for the Pride as they reclaimed an 11-7 lead. Regis was in control from then on as they outscored their counterparts 14-6 throughout the remainder of the set. Roque led the Pride with three kills in the set while Burns and DiDomenico each finished with three for the Lynx.
For the third consecutive set, the Lynx jumped out to an early edge as two kills apiece from Burns and DiDomenico helped push the hosts to a 9-6 advantage. Once again, Regis answered with five straight points to take their first lead of the third at 11-9. The Pride would not slow down as an 8-2 spurt gave them breathing room before rolling to the 25-18 third set win.
The Pride will wrap up their five-match road trip on Saturday as they travel to Johnson & Wales for a tri-match with the Wildcats and The Sage Colleges.
