PRIDE HALT SKID, SWEEP EAGLES

WESTON, Mass. – Four players posted six-plus kills, led by 10 kills from freshman Marcos Aguirre (Norwalk, Calif.), as the Regis College men's volleyball team posted a 3-0 win over Daniel Webster College on Wednesday night in New England Collegiate Conference action.

The Pride snaps an eight-game losing skid to improve to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in the NECC. Daniel Webster falls to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in league games. Regis picks up their first win in program history over the Eagles, having gone 0-10 against DWC since the 2010 season.

Regis held an 11-10 lead in the opening set before back-to-back Pride errors followed by a Travis Somero (New Ipswich, Mass.) service ace forced a Pride timeout. A pair of Ryan Howdeshell (Fairbanks, Alaska) kills sandwiched another Pride error as the Eagles stretched their lead to 16-11 a few points later.

Regis used a quick 5-0 run on four Eagles errors and a Josiah Roque (Oxnard, Calif.) kill, and the Pride took a late 19-18 lead after a Marcos Aguirre kill. The Pride closed the game on a 6-0 run capped off by a Ryan Conte (Oxnard, Calif.) kill that sealed the opening game 25-18.

Set two was a back and forth battle as the teams were tied as late as 17-17 following a Joel Hendrix (Kane'ohe, Hawaii) kill. The Pride ended game two in a similar fashion to the first, rattling off eight-straight points as part of a 9-1 run to end the set, and grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-17 win.

The Pride jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in game three before DWC answered with a 4-0 run to take a 5-4 lead following a Darrien Mason (Farmington, Conn.) ace. The Eagles led as late as 14-12 after another Howdeshell kill, but the Pride went on a 5-0 run to force an Eagles timeout with Regis leading 17-14. Daniel Webster would get as close as 18-15, but the Pride held off the Eagles by scoring seven of the final 10 points in the match to grab a 3-0 sweep of DWC.

Regis hit .215 for the match, including a .353 percentage with 17 kills in the final set.

Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.) posted seven kills, while Ryan Conte and Josiah Roque added six kills apiece to help the Pride attack. Sean Bisnett (Oxnard, Calif.) led the Pride defense with seven digs, and Ryan Husher (Camarillo, Calif.) dished out 25 assists in the win.

Daniel Webster was paced by eight kills from Ryan Howdeshell, who also added 10 assists and a game-high eight digs. Joel Hendrix chipped in six kills, four digs, and three blocks, with Tommy Reyes (Providence, R.I.) adding five kills, seven assists, and six digs.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Crimson and Gold travel to Southern Vermont College for an NECC matchup with the Mountaineers at 1:00 p.m. Daniel Webster travels to #12 Rivier University for a tri-match with Emerson College and the Raiders beginning at 1:00 p.m.
