PRIDE DROPS 3-0 DECISION ON SENIOR DAY

WESTON, Mass. – Newbury College defeated Regis College, 3-0, by set scores of 25-8, 25-18, and 25-20 in a New England Collegiate Conference volleyball match on Tuesday night in Weston, Mass. The Pride finishes its season at 1-18 overall and 0-12 in its inaugural season in the NECC. The Nighthawks improve to 8-15 overall and 5-6 in the NECC. Regis honored seniors Andrew Carroll (Natick, Mass.) and Si Pan Leong (Boston, Mass.) in a pregame ceremony as a part of its annual Senior Day.

In the first set, Newbury raced out to an early 7-0 lead, including a pair of Danny Kim (Plainview, N.Y.) kills, before Andrew Carroll's first kill of the day registered the Pride's first point. Carroll's second kill of the day made it a 12-4 game, but the Nighthawks rattled off five-straight points and ended the match on an 8-4 run that sealed game one, 25-8.

Game two started as a back and forth as Regis grabbed its first lead of the day at 3-2 on a kill by Alex Caliendo (Windsor, Conn.), but Newbury responded with 10 of the next 11 points to take a 12-4 lead on another kill from Kim. Si Pan Leong scored back-to-back points on a kill and a service ace to make it 12-6, and Newbury answered again, going on an 8-3 run capped off by a Kim service ace that made it 20-9.

Three-straight errors by the Nighthawks made it a 20-12 game until Jeremy Bergeron (Fitchburg, Mass.) registered a kill to make it 21-12. Newbury had match point at 24-13, and with their backs to the wall, the Pride scored four straight points that prompted a Nighthawk timeout. The break in action set-up Benjamin Weiner's (Barrington, R.I.) kill on a pass from Cody Braden (Fairgrove, Md.) that ended game two, 25-18.

The Pride began the third game on a small 3-0 run as Doug Dunbar (Danvers, Mass.) and Caliendo blocked a pair of Chi Yin Li (Framingham, Mass.) attacks. The Nighthawks recovered, taking a 5-4 lead on a Chris Chin (Brockton, Mass.) kill, and extended their lead to 8-4 on three-straight Pride errors. Regis battled back as Markenson Telfort (Revere, Mass.) registered his first kill of the contest to make it an 11-9 game.

The Nighthawks extended its lead to 18-12, but back-to-back kills from Carroll and Drew Wilder (Brockton, Mass.) followed by a Wilder service ace made it 18-15, prompting a Nighthawk timeout. Out of the stoppage, the Pride added two more quick points on a pair of Newbury errors, but the Nighthawks went on a small 4-1 run that forced Regis to call a timeout. Chris Chin and Justin Franks (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) posted kills to make it 24-18, and the Pride would add two more points before Justin Franks ended the final game with another kill to make it 25-20.

Regis was led by seven kills from Andrew Carroll, who also posted four digs.
