REGIS FALLS TO SOUTHERN VERMONT 3-0 IN MEN'S VOLLEYBALL ACTION

WESTON, Mass.- The Regis College men's volleyball team fell to NECC opponent Southern Vermont College Thursday night at the Teresa Higgins Gymnasium by the score of 3-0 (25-10, 25-5, 25-8). The Pride moves to 1-10 overall on the season and 0-6 in NECC play. The visiting Mountaineers move to 6-6 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.  

The first set started with an offensive attack from the Mountaineers going up 2-0. Regis battled back to tie the set at 2-2 on a block from Markenson Telfort (Revere, Mass.). The Pride's Alex Caliendo (Windsor, Conn.) served on the next play that was blocked by Nick Haggerty (Wyantskill, N.Y.) to put the Mountaineers up by one. Southern Vermont would channel this momentum to go on a 6-0 run and force Regis to call a timeout. SVC continued to click on offense taking control of the set by tallying the final five points on the set victory at 25-10.

The second set opened with a tally from Southern Vermont's Herson Canta (Los Angeles, Calif.)  on a service ace to put the Mountaineers up 1-0. Canta had two consecutive successful serves before the Pride's Si Pan Leong (Boston, Mass.) converted on a set from David Amicangioli (Belmont, Mass.) to make the score 4-1 in favor of SVC. Corey Mills rallied off three straight service aces midway through the second set to move the score to 15-2. Tino Escovedo (Fresno, Calif.) rallied to finish the set with successful serve that was killed by Mills to put the final tally at 25-5 and give SVC its second victory.

Canta opened the third set for the Mountaineers serving two successful times to put the score at 2-0. Regis answered back by forcing a ball handling error off a hard attack from senior Andrew Carroll (Natick, Mass.) to make the score 2-1. SVC received a solid effort from its back court to help the seal the victory with a 25-8 finish in the third set.

Regis received offensive performances from Carroll who led the team with three kills and Amicangioli who chipped in with six assists. The Mountaineers were led on offense by Anthony Barahona (Eagle Rock, Calif.) who notched a team high with seven kills. Canta was the main set up man for SVC dishing out 30 assists on the contest, while fellow teammate Connor Murray (Litchfield, Conn.) racked up a team high in blocks with four.

The Pride returns to action Tuesday March 13th, when the team travels to Boston, Massachusetts to take on Emerson College at 7:00 p.m. The Mountaineers resume play Wednesday March 14th, when the travel to take on Sage College at 7:00 p.m.
