BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth men’s
volleyball team saw its three-match losing streak come to an end as
the Leopards used a balanced offensive attack to sweep Regis, 3-0,
in an NECVA New England match at Tansey Gym.
Regis jumped out to an early, 3-0 lead, as freshman Drew
Wilder (Brockton, Mass.) scored three straight points from
the service line. The Leopards rallied to tie the score at
5-all, and, leading 7-6, went on a 9-1 run to pull ahead,
16-7. Three straight points by the Pride cut the lead to
16-10, but Wentworth outscored the visitors 9-2 to take the first
game, 25-12.
Wentworth opened the second game on an 11-3 run and never looked
back, en route to a 25-14 win and a 2-0 lead over the Pride.
The Leopards held a 16-6 lead in the third game before the
Pride roared back to pull within six at 19-13. Leading 23-16,
Wentworth closed out the match by scoring the next two points for a
25-16 win.
Senior Lowell Jesmer (Rochester, N.Y.) led the
Leopard attack with six kills, three aces, five digs and two
blocks. Freshman Ross Burdett (Needham,
Mass.) added five kills, while sophomore Coerte
Voorhees (Hopewell, N.H.), senior Chase
Meyers (Austin, Texas), and senior Dan
Mulvey (Halifax, Mass.) each had four kills. Meyers
and Mulvey had four and three blocks, respectively, while sophomore
Tyler Moriarty (Wilbraham, Mass,) had 19 assists and became the
fourth player in program history to record over 1,000 career
assists.
With the win, Wentworth improves to 2-4 overall and earns its
first league win of 2011, standing at 1-2. The Leopards
continue their four-match homestand on Thursday against
Lesley. Regis drops to 0-3 (0-3) and hosts Elms that same
night.
