Torres Named GNAC Men’s Tennis Rookie of Week

WINTHROP, Mass. – After a perfect week in both singles and doubles to finish the 2018-19 season, freshman Sebastian Torres (San Juan, Puerto Rico) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Playing in the number two singles position last Tuesday, Torres lost just one game in his match against UMass Dartmouth (6-1, 6-0). He then defeated conference opponents Suffolk (6-3, 6-2) and Norwich (6-3, 6-1) at number one singles, with both victories coming in straight sets.

He joined with Owen Pelissier (Hingham, Mass.) at second doubles for three victories, losing a total of nine games in the three sets. The twosome extended their winning streak to five matches with victories over UMass Dartmouth (8-4), Suffolk (8-2), and Norwich (8-3).

This is the first weekly award for Torres in his collegiate career and the second one for Regis this season, as Johnny Pallotta (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was named GNAC Player of the Week March 18.

Regis won its final four matches of the regular season to finish with a 10-10 overall record. The Pride ended up in a three-way tie for second place in the GNAC North standings with a 3-2 league mark, but they lost a tiebreaker to Colby-Sawyer for a spot in the conference tournament.
