WESTON, Mass. – Regis (Mass.) men’s and women’s tennis coach John Ciarleglio has been named the USPTA New England Division College Coach of the Year. The announcement was made by the USPTA national office along with a listing of other major awards.
“It is a major honor to be recognized by one’s peers,” said Ciarleglio. “I have many people to thank for my successes including the Longfellow Club, Laurie Hammel and Phil Parrish. I also want to thank other USPTA colleagues, Avis Murray, Mike Mercier, the other New England Board members and certainly former Regis Athletic Director Marybeth Lamb, who hired me as the first men's coach and then later to head up the women’s program.”
Ciarleglio has developed both his men’s and women’s programs into ones of regional prominence. Both teams won five straight NECC titles before moving to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference where, this past season, the women finished the regular season second and the men advanced to the league tournament final.
Ciarleglio began his tenure with both teams in 2009 and this past season notched his 100th career win on the men’s side, only the third Regis coach across all sports to do so. He was also twice named NECC Men’s Coach of the Year.
Founded in 1927, the United States Professional Tennis Association is the global leader in tennis-teacher certification and professional development. With more than 15,000 members worldwide, the association raises the standards of tennis-teaching professionals and coaches, and promotes a greater awareness of the sport. Approximately 13,500 USPTA members work in the United States. The rest represent more than 80 countries around the world. The majority of USPTA's membership consists of Professional and Elite Professional level members who work full time in the tennis industry.
