PRIDE WRAP UP TOP SEED WITH 8-1 WIN

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Regis College wrapped up the top seed in the upcoming New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Men's Tennis Tournament with an 8-1 victory over Newbury College on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Michael Beluch (Lynn, Mass.) led the Pride to their 12th-straight victory with a 7-6, 6-2 victory in first singles.

Beluch and Jarid Polley (Reading, Mass.) fell behind 7-4 to Newbury's Antonios Tran (Chelsea, Mass.) and Christian Repunte (Burlington, Mass.) at the top doubles spot, before storming back to take the next three games and force a tiebreak and eventually claiming the match, 9-8, with an 8-6 tiebreak victory.

Nathan Cohen (Randolph, Mass.) and Jeremy Morgenbesser (Bayport, N.Y.) held off junior Joey Verdon (Catskill, N.Y.) and senior Gerard Font-Raventos (Barcelona, Spain), 8-1 in second doubles. Senior Andy White (Bozeman, Mont.) and Austin Nace (Sarasota, Fla.) took third doubles by a score of 8-3 to give the Pride a 3-0 advantage.

In the singles portion of the competition, Polley wasted little time in third singles with a two-set, 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nighthawk senior John Morgan (Cumberland, R.I.), while White claimed fourth singles by the same score, 6-0, 6-1 to give the Pride a 5-0 lead to seal the win. Verdon gave first year Nick Hildreth (Harvard, Mass.) a battle in the first set of fifth singles, but Hildreth was able to grind out the 7-6 victory and take the match with a 6-3 win in game two.

Repunte picked up the lone Nighthawk win knocking off Morgenbesser with a three-set come-from-behind victory in second singles. After dropping the first set, 7-5, Repunte responded with a 6-2 win in the second set before claiming victory in the third set with a 10-7 decision.

Newbury drops to 6-2 in the conference and 9-4 overall while Regis remains undefeated improving to 9-0 in the NECC and 12-5 overall.

The Pride have one final game left on the schedule against Becker College on Monday April 21st at 3:00 p.m. It was re-scheduled from last Sunday April 13th.
