REGIS OPENS NECC PLAY WITH 9-0 SWEEP

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's tennis team began its New England Collegiate Conference title defense with a 9-0 sweep over visiting Becker College on Saturday afternoon in Weston, Mass. The Pride have won four-straight matches to move to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the NECC, while the Hawks drop to 0-1 overall and in league games.

The Crimson and Gold came out aggressive in doubles play as the Pride took an early 3-0 lead, all by the score of 8-1. Michael Beluch (Lynn, Mass.) and Jarid Polley (Reading, Mass.) won at No. 1 doubles over Bernardo MacAroun (Santa Doroteia, Brazil) and Aaron Peterson (San Diego, Calif.). Nathan Cohen (Randolph, Mass.) and Jeremy Morgenbesser (Bayport, N.Y.) won at No. 2 doubles, and the senior duo of Andy White (Bozeman, Mont.) and Jeff Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) were victorious at the No. 3 spot.

Polley picked up the first win of singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Tyler Newsome (Brantford, Ontatio) in No. 4 singles. Nathan Cohen took down Brian Fradsham in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles to seal the match for the Pride, and Austin Nace (Sarasota, Fla.) added a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Guillermo Romera Rodriguez (Madrid, Spain).

Mike Beluch and Jeremy Morgenbesser posted matching set scores of 6-2, 6-2 in their wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Nick Hildreth wrapped up the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Brittan Morris (Cedar Park, Texas) at No. 5 singles.

"Becker has a solid team, with excellent players at the top and they have a good balance of their team developing with good athletes," said Coach Ciarleglio. "Mike Beluch, Jeremy Morgenbesser, and Nick Hildreth all played well in their matches as they stayed focused on the task at hand to beat some good players."

Regis returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when the Pride hosts Mitchell College in a rematch of the 2013 NECC Championship match at 4:30 p.m. Becker looks for its first win of the year on Tuesday when the Hawks travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
