Pride Men’s Soccer Drops Rainy GNAC Contest to SJC

WESTON, Mass. - Saint Joseph's College defeated Regis College, 5-2, Wednesday evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's soccer match at rainy Regis Stadium.

The Monks' first goal came in the 31st minute when the Pride attempted to clear the ball after a corner kick opportunity, but Alec Kosinski corralled the ball and blasted it into the net to give Saint Joseph's College the early lead.

Just a minute-and-a-half into the second half, Saint Joseph's received a penalty kick attempt when Gus Ford drew a foul in the box, and Austin Ward converted on the opportunity. A little less than four minutes later, Ford drew another foul in the box, and this time he was successful on the penalty kick chance to extend the Monk lead to 3-0.

After an own goal in the 65th minute increased Saint Joseph's College's lead to 4-0, the Pride finally broke through in the 70th minute when Jacob Freitas (Dracut, Mass.) sent a crossing pass from the right side of the field to the left side. Zack Acciardo (Derry, N.H.) sprinted up the field and redirected the ball into the net for his second goal in three matches.

The Monks reestablished their four-goal advantage in the 84th minute on a tally by Henry Wylde off an assist from Gavin Lins. Regis received its own penalty kick opportunity in the 88th minute, but Liam Foley turned away both the penalty kick attempt and one follow-up shot. However, Alessandro DiPaola (Newington, Conn.) converted on the second rebound for his first career goal to close out the scoring.

Mike Sheridan started in net for the Monks and made one save in 53:26 before Foley took over for the final 36:34, collecting three saves in that span. Freddie Beckmann (Franklin, Mass.) earned eight saves in 81 minutes of action before being relieved by Kyle Weidemann (Piscataway, N.J.), who finished with one save during his time on the field.

The Monks outshot the Pride, 23-11, led by Kosinski and Gracien Mukwa with three shots apiece. Saint Joseph's College also created 10 corner kick opportunities while holding Regis to just one corner kick during the match.
