Men’s Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College withstood several solid scoring chances from Colby-Sawyer College before scoring early in overtime for a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's collegiate soccer match at Regis Stadium.

Colby-Sawyer created the first scoring opportunity in the extra session, but a shot by Braeden Carleton sailed wide right. Regis responded with a counterattack, as Federico Lavini-Ayalla (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) corralled the ball and started advancing it up the field before finding Jacob Freitas (Dracut, Mass.) down the right side. Freitas slid the ball past Charger goalie Ryan Witty for the game-winning tally two minutes into overtime.

After a feeling-out process in the first 14 minutes of the match, the teams exchanged shots, with Callum Buchanan's attempt stopped by Freddie Beckmann (Franklin, Mass.) and Santiago Pedraza Novak's (Bogota, Colombia) opportunity turned away by starting keeper Lucas Boetsch. Witty replaced Boetsch in the 22nd minute and made one save in the first half, while a shot by Lavini-Ayalla in the 43rd minute hit the crossbar.

The Chargers took control early in the second half, forcing Beckmann to make three saves in the first nine minutes, two of them off shots by Conner McKearin. Beckmann finished with a season-high six saves as he earned his second clean sheet of the season.

Colby-Sawyer outshot Regis, 18-8, led by five shots from Buchanan and three shots from three other Chargers. Witty finished with three saves in over 70 minutes of action.

Regis College (4-2, 2-1 GNAC) travels to Standish, Maine, to face Saint Joseph's College Wednesday, Sept. 29, starting at 7 p.m. Colby-Sawyer College (1-5, 1-3 GNAC) also hits the road Wednesday for a 7 p.m. GNAC contest at Elms College.
