PRIDE DROP CONTEST TO MARINERS, 2-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Regis College men's soccer team fell to the Mitchell College Hawks by a score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon on the final day of New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) regular season play.

The Pride fall to 7-10-0 overall, 4-3-0 NECC and will be the fourth seed in the upcoming NECC playoffs, while the Mariners (7-7-0 overall, 5-2-0 NECC) clinched the second seed and a first-round bye in the postseason tournament.

The Pride got off to a great start, scoring on the first shot attempt of the match in the fourth minute. A Mitchell foul yielded a free kick alongside the left sideline from 30 yards out, and Ricardo Argueta (Los Angeles, Calif.) played a ball into the box that went untouched and into the far corner of the goal. It was his second tally of the season.

The Pride continued to control play and nearly scored again in the 43rd minute when Dillon Lanctot (Somersworth, N.H.) drilled a shot off the crossbar. Regis looked like it would take the lead into the halftime intermission, but Mitchell drew a foul in the box with 53 seconds remaining in the stanza and was awarded a penalty kick. Senior Michael Berthiaume (Brooklyn, Conn.) lined up and placed the ball into the left corner for his fourth goal of the year to tie the game at one goal apiece going into halftime.

In the 64th minute, the Mariners broke through again when Erik Littlehales (Rochester, Vt.), scored the eventual game-winner after fighting through two defenders to get a one-on-one opportunity with Stefan Todorovic (Los Angeles, Calif.) The freshman took a low shot that found its way into the back of the net for his first career collegiate goal.

The Pride finished the game with 11 shots, while Todorovic recorded five saves in the loss.

The Crimson and Gold will host Daniel Webster College on Wednesday, October 31 at 4:00 p.m. for one of the NECC Quarterfinal matchups, while Mitchell will await its opponent for one of the NECC Semifinal games on Friday, November 2.
