TAVARES GOAL LIFTS PRIDE OVER NIGHTHAWKS

WESTON, Mass. – Senior Steve Tavares recorded the lone goal of the day as Regis went on to beat the Newbury Nighthawks, 1-0, in New England Collegiate Conference men's soccer action. Regis improves to 5-8-0 on the season (2-1-0 NECC), while the loss drops Newbury to 4-6-1 (1-1-0 NECC).

Tavares wasted little time, scoring the game-winner at the 8:12 mark. After receiving a throw-in deep in Newbury's defensive territory, junior Alex Caliendo (Windsor, Conn.) sent a long ball into the box, which found classmate Jeff Parrish (Framingham, Mass.). Parrish was able to flick the ball to an open Tavares in front of the net, who slipped the ball in past Newbury goalkeeper Antonios Tran (Chelsea, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead. The goal marked the 12th of the year for Tavares.

In the twelve minute of play, junior midfielder Bryan Barrios (Central Falls, R.I.) took a blistering shot from the top of the box that was headed for the top right corner of the goal. Stefan Todorovic (Los Angeles, Calif.) was forced to make a leaping save in the air and was able to tip the ball wide. It proved to be the only shot on goal of the half for the Nighthawks.

Todorovic was tested again in the 59th minute of play when Newbury's leading scorer, Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, Mass.) found himself alone near the penalty area. The senior took a low, hard shot towards the bottom left corner of the net, but once again Todorovic came up big, making the diving stop for his second and final save of the day.

In a physical game that saw each team receive five yellow cards, Tavares led the way offensively, recording a game-high seven shots. Christian Mukala (Malden, Mass.) also chipped in with four of the Pride's 21 shot attempts in the game. Tran finished the game with six saves for Newbury.

After a three-game homestand, Regis will head on the road, traveling to Daniel Webster College for a 4:00 p.m. conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. Newbury will return home, hosting Dean College on Monday for a 3:30 p.m. nonconference game.
