TAVARES BROTHERS, PRIDE BLAZE PAST ELMS 2-1

WESTON, Mass.Steve Tavares and Nick Tavares (Bellingham, Mass.) each scored goals on Saturday afternoon, as the Pride opened up NECC conference play with a 2-1 victory over visiting Elms College. With the win, Regis improves to 3-6 (1-0 NECC) on the year, while the loss drops Elms to 1-5 (0-1 NECC) on the season.

Steve Tavares got things started for the Pride in the tenth minute of play when he beat Christian Kostka (Oxford, Conn.) on the left side of the net for the go-ahead goal. Junior Angel Aguilar (Silver Spring, Md.) was credited with the assist.

Junior Adam O'Grady (Somers, Conn.) responded shortly after for the Blazers and tied things up 1-1 in the 17th minute of play. O'Grady's shot in the box got past goalkeeper Stefan Todorovic (Los Angeles, Calif.) on an unassisted play. O'Grady led the Blazers in shot attempts on the day with three.

In dramatic fashion, Nick Tavares was able to score the eventual game-winning goal with under thirty seconds to play in the first half. Alex Caliendo (Windsor, Conn.) took a free kick attempt that Kostka was able to save, but Tavares was able to volley the ensuing rebound past the keeper.

In a second half rally that saw the visitors outshoot Regis 10-3, Elms nearly scored on several close calls. Great defense from the Regis back line and a few stellar saves by Todorovic proved to hold them off. Todorovic finished the game with eight saves.

Kostka, who split time with Nicholson Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica) in goal, each made two saves for the Blazers.

Regis will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 24, as the team travels to Lesley University for an 8:00 p.m. conference matchup with the Lynx.
