SECOND HALF SURGE LIFTS MUSTANGS OVER PRIDE, 3-1

Newton, Mass. – Despite jumping to an early 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game, Mount Ida was able to score three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat the Regis men's soccer team 3-1 on Wednesday night in Newton, Mass. The loss drops the Pride's record to 2-6, while Mount Ida improves to 2-3-1.

Steve Tavares (Bellingham, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway just 7:31 minutes into the contest to put the Pride up 1-0. The goal marked the senior's team-leading seventh of the year.

Regis was able to hold onto the lead for the entire first half, but Mount Ida came out of the break looking to get on the board. Freshman Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) scored two goals in less than eight minutes to put the host squad ahead just under fifteen minutes into the second half. Martinez's first goal was assisted by sophomore Ryan Gray (Bayport, N.Y.), while his eventual game-winner was unassisted.

Gray tacked on some insurance for the Mustangs in the 73-rd minute, placing a shot past Regis goalkeeper Stefan Todorovic (Los Angeles, Calif.) after following his own rebound off the post for the 3-1 lead. Todorovic finished the game with two saves.

Regis recorded three shots in the game, one each by Tavares and freshmen Graham Sutherland (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Dillon Lanctot (Somersworth, N.H.).

The Pride will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as the team opens up conference play and hosts Elms College at 2:00 p.m.
