REGIS BESTED BY FALCONS IN SEASON OPENER

WESTON, Mass. – Led by a five point performance from senior midfielder Stephen Zapata (Hamden, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus College Falcons captured a 3-0 victory over Regis on Friday evening in Weston, Mass. With the win, the Falcons improve to 1-0, while the Pride falls to 0-1 on the young season.

For most of the first half, both teams traded shots and possession, but neither squad was able to get on the scoreboard. It was not until the 31:05 mark that the Falcons finally found the back of the net when Zapata ran onto a streaking ball and challenged Regis goalkeeper Stefan Todorovic (Los Angeles, Calif.) for a 50/50 ball. Zapata was able to slip the ball past Todorovic for the 1-0 lead.

Coming into the second half, the Falcons wasted little time and made it a 2-0 game in the 51-st minute. Sophomore Richard Mitchell (Naugatuck, Conn.) was able to tap the ball in with an open net off a pass in the box from Zapata.

Zapata capped off the scoring in the 64-th minute when his free kick from just outside the 18 yard-line slipped in the net past a diving Todorovic.

Regis received perhaps their best chance of the game just minutes later as freshman Christian Mukala (Malden, Mass.) had a header inside the box from an outside cross, but the ball ricocheted off the crossbar before the Falcons cleared the ball away.

Mukala led the way for Regis with three shots, while senior Nick Tavares also chipped in with two. Todorovic finished the game with five saves on the day.

Regis will look to bounce back this Sunday, Sept. 2, as the team travels to Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, Mass. for a 1:00 pm contest against Suffolk University.
