PRIDE FALLS TO MOUNTAINEERS 5-2 IN NECC OPENER

Weston, Mass.-The Regis College men's soccer team was defeated by Southern Vermont College Saturday afternoon by the score of 5-2. The Pride moves to 4-4 on the season and are 0-1 in NECC play. The Mountaineers improve to 4-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in NECC play.

The Mountaineers got on the board 12 minutes into the first period, when sophomore Pierre Massena (West Milford, N.J.) laid a ball across the middle of the box that Nick Haggerty (Wynantskill, NY) put home.  The Pride answered right back, when Shawn McDonough (Framingham, Mass.) hit a full volley from 18 yards to even the score at 1-1. Ricky Guyette (Medford, Mass.) gave the Pride a brief lead at the 19 minute mark when he finished  a pass from  Josh Fidalgo (Dorchester, Mass.) to make the score 2-1.

The Mountaineers rallied back to even the score four minutes after Guyettes goal. Massena found an open Haggerty on the crease for an open shot to make the score 2-2. A minute later Haggerty found the back of the net again to give Mountaineers a 3-2 lead. The first half was winding down when Chris Hansen (Raymertown, N.Y.)  hit a free kick that bounced off a Pride defender and into the back of the net to put the Mountaineers up 4-2.

In the second half the Mountaineers tallied the final goal of the game when Haggerty put the ball top corner off a pass from Ignacio Cervantes (Pico Rivera, Calif.) and made the final score 5-2. Pride goaltender Andrew LaMacchia (Lynn, Mass.) finished the game with three saves on the day.

The Crimson and Gold will be back in action Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. to take on Johnson and Wales. The Mountaineers will be back in action Sunday when they host the Lyons from Wheaton College at 4:00 p.m.
