Men’s Lacrosse Improves to 3-0 with Road Win

SALEM, Mass. – Regis College posted its first 3-0 start to the season in program history after defeating Salem State University, 12-7, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Just over four minutes into the match, Regis struck first as Matt Cabassa (Weymouth, Mass.) scored off an assist from Jack Jaynes (Reading, Mass.). Salem State rattled off three straight goals in the span of less than two minutes to pull ahead, 3-1, but Jaynes picked up a quick goal just seven seconds after the Vikings' third tally to close to within one heading into the second quarter.

The Pride held the Vikings scoreless in the second period as Devin Hammon (Chicopee, Mass.) made eight of his career-high 23 saves, tied for third-most in a single match in program history. In addition, Regis won four of five faceoffs and spread out the offense as four different players scored in the period to extend the Pride lead to 6-3 at halftime.

Cabassa won the opening faceoff of the third quarter and found Anthony Marsella (Johnston, R.I.) for a goal with just six seconds elapsed from the clock. Brendan Cook (Billerica, Mass.) scored the first of his two goals 49 seconds later as Regis took firm hold of the momentum with an 8-3 lead.

Salem State (2-2) finally stopped the Regis run with a goal by Cameron Smith, but Connor Deveau (Harwich, Mass.) and Jaynes scored 38 seconds apart to keep the Vikings at arm's length. Salem State scored the final two goals of the third quarter, but the Pride outscored the home team 2-1 in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory.

Jaynes led the Pride with four goals and two assists, while Marsella also notched a hat trick with three goals along with an assist. Thomas Crater (Welcome, N.C.) went 14-for-17 on faceoffs while Cabassa went 4-for-5, and Hammon finished with a .767 save percentage.

Timothy Eddings led the Vikings with three goals and an assist, and Cameron Collins finished with two goals, seven groundballs, and five caused turnovers. Ryan Cohen played the entire match in net for Salem State and was credited with eight saves.

Regis College (3-0) opens its home and conference schedule Wednesday, March 13, against University of Saint Joseph beginning at 6 p.m.
