Men’s Lacrosse Plays Through Lightning Delay Saturday

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Regis College lost to Dean College, 17-1, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse match at Grant Field.

Neither team was able to score through the first 10 minutes of the match as Regis goalie Nick Penta (Cotuit, Mass.) made six saves during that span. Christopher Wendt finally broke through for the Bulldogs with 4:45 left in the opening period, converting on his scoring chance off a pass from Diego Alvarez-Segee.

Ryan Clunie scored in the final minute of the first quarter, and then Grayson Colvin scored three-and-a-half minutes into the second period to increase the Dean lead to 3-0 when play was stopped due to lightning. After a delay of over three hours, Regis took advantage of an extra-man opportunity, as Brendan Cook (Billerica, Mass.) scored off an assist by Ryan Richardson (Corona, Calif.) midway through the period to close the Pride deficit to 3-1.

Dean (8-2, 5-2 GNAC) scored two goals in the span of 35 seconds near the end of the first half to take a 5-1 advantage into halftime. The Bulldogs put the game away with 11 goals in the third quarter, starting with four goals within the first four minutes of the period.

Alec Speirs led the Bulldogs with four goals, while Alvarez-Segee finished with two goals and four assists. Tyler Benedetto collected 13 groundballs as he was a perfect 19-for-19 on faceoffs.

Penta finished with a career-high 27 saves as he posted a .614 save percentage, earning nine saves in the first quarter, seven saves in the second period, and eight saves in the third quarter. Four different players saw time in net for the Bulldogs, with starter Alexander Govoni and James Rollins collecting three saves apiece.

Regis College (2-9, 0-6 GNAC) hosts Anna Maria College on Military Appreciation Night Wednesday, April 13, starting at 7 p.m. Before the match, military veterans will be invited to join the teams on the field for the playing of the United States National Anthem, and fans coming to the game are asked to bring a donation for a clothing drive benefiting VA Boston.
