NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Bears scored the first seven goals of the game on their way to a 15-5 victory over Regis in non conference action.
Coast Guard improves to 5-2 which surpasses their win total from the Bears entire 2015 inaugural season (4-10). With the loss, the Pride drop to 5-2 on the year.
Senior Justin Huemme had a season high four points with three goals and an assist while freshman Jack Pope had his second career hat trick. Senior Louis DePaolis had two goals to add to his team leading 17 goals. He is currently third in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in goals this season.
Sophomore Matt Huemme and Freshman Cole Hudson each had two goals as well. Senior Trent Moon had a season high three points with a goal and two assists.
Regis was led by sophomore AJ Karofsky (Barrington, R.I.) who had three goals while senior Nicky Rodrigo had two goals and an assist. The Bears held junior Alex Ferran (Miami, Fla.), the Pride's lead goal scorer (20), to one shot and no goals.
Coast Guard owned the first period, immediately taking control of the game with seven consecutive goals. Hudson had two goals over this stretch while Moon and freshman Ian Logan each had a goal and an assist.
The Bears tallied eight more goals the rest of the way and held the Pride to five, including zero goals in both the first and third period, as they tied the largest margin of victory on the season at ten with the season opening win over Becker (16-6) and the second most goals in a single game on the season.
Freshman Colin Cashin won 10-14 face-offs and had a game high seven ground balls. Cashin is currently fourth in the NEWMAC with 68 won face-offs and second with 35 ground balls on the year.
Senior Jeff Bors (3) and freshmen Tom Bleifuss (4) and Mike McCaslin (3) were dominant on defense combining for 10 caused turnovers and eight groundballs. The Bears defense as a whole produced 29 Regis turnovers and only allowed the Pride to complete 13-25 attempted clears.
Freshman Trey Johnson earned his fourth win of the season (4-1) making two saves on four shots and allowed two goals. Both Sophomore Kurt Caminske and freshman Connor Hoehle took over in the second half combining for three saves on six shots and allowed three goals.
Johnson continues to have a great start to the season as he leads the NEWMAC in save percentage (61.5), goals against (30) and goals-against average (6.25). As of March 25th Johnson was 19th in the nation in save percentage.
Regis returns to action on Wednesday, March 30th for a 7:00 p.m. contest at Salem State.
